What Is Vedic Astrology?

Vedic astrology—also called Jyotiṣa, the “science of light”—is a predictive and spiritual tradition that originated in the Indian subcontinent thousands of years ago. It draws from sacred texts such as the Vedanga Jyotiṣa, the Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra, and lineage commentaries that connect the motion of planets to dharma, karma, and the unfolding of time. Sidereal vs. tropical: the zodiac reference point

The most visible difference between Vedic and modern Western astrology is the zodiac reference point. Western astrology typically uses the tropical zodiac, which fixes 0° Aries to the vernal equinox every year. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, aligning 0° Aries with the actual constellation of Aries in the sky. Because of the Earth’s axial precession (a slow wobble that shifts the equinoxes), the sidereal zodiac drifts roughly one degree every 72 years relative to the tropical zodiac. Today, sidereal calculations place the Sun about 23° behind its tropical placement. The sidereal approach keeps readings tethered to the observable night sky, which is why Cosmitra references the rāśis (signs) and nakṣatras (lunar mansions) you can point to with a telescope.

Timing techniques unique to Jyotiṣa

Vedic astrologers emphasise timing frameworks such as the Vimśottarī daśā system—a sequence that maps 120 years of life into planetary rulerships—as well as gochara (transits) and annual charts like the Varṣaphala. These tools are designed to answer “when” questions with fine-grained specificity. Western astrology has its own forecasting methods (secondary progressions, solar returns, etc.), but Jyotiṣa treats planetary periods as the backbone of everyday counsel.
